Vladislav Goldin's 31 points led the No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team to an 80-76 win in overtime over Northwestern on Sunday (Jan. 19) at Crisler Center as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration. Despite early shooting woes, the Wolverines improved in the second half to send the game to overtime, where they overpowered the Wildcats to improve to 6-1 in Big Ten play.

First Half
Michigan started the game shooting 1-for-13 from the field, allowing Northwestern to jump out to an early 9-5 lead. A three-pointer from Jones ended nearly a five-minute stretch without a U-M field goal, before two free throws from Sam Walters gave the Wolverines their first lead of the day with 11:11 to go.

Both teams struggled from behind the arc, with Northwestern shooting 1-for-7 and Michigan 1-for-8 from three-point range in the first nine minutes. Goldin then took over, making three consecutive three-pointers—also adding a tip-in—as he scored 11 of U-M's next 12 points. A three-pointer from Burnett capped off a 12-2 Michigan run, and the Wolverines led 25-20 with 5:19 remaining.

Northwestern outscored Michigan 15-5 in the final 5:19, taking a 35-30 advantage into the break. The Wildcats made five of their last six field goal attempts, shooting 48 percent from the field compared to U-M's 29 percent mark.

Second Half
Coming out of the break, Donaldson and Goldin led a 12-5 charge in the first three-and-a-half minutes to give Michigan a 42-40 advantage. Goldin had eight points in this span as the Wolverines focused on getting shots around the rim. Donaldson added the other four points and assisted both of Goldin's field goals—including an alley-oop 12 seconds into the half.

During the next six minutes, both teams had three-minute stretches without a field goal. Michigan made just one of seven field goal attempts in that span before Rubin Jones hit a key three-pointer to give Michigan a 50-49 lead with 10:45 to go.

Back-and-forth play continued for the remainder of regulation. Two U-M baskets gave the Wolverines the lead in the final three minutes, but Northwestern answered both times. With the game tied, Michigan had two shot attempts at the end of regulation, but neither converted, sending the game to overtime tied 65-65.

Overtime
The overtime period largely consisted of free throw shooting, but baskets from Gayle and Burnett helped Michigan (14-4, 6-1 Big Ten) jump out to a 69-65 lead with 3:31 left. Each of Northwestern's (11-7, 2-5 Big Ten) 11 points in overtime came via free throws, while U-M made nine shots from the line. Missed free throws and a couple of defensive stops by the Wolverines allowed them to pull away.

Leaders and Best
Goldin led all scorers with 31 points, including a career-high 10 free throw makes on 10-for-12 shooting from the line. Nimari Burnett also reached double figures, totaling 13 points and six rebounds. Roddy Gayle Jr. scored 10 points, four of which came in overtime. Tre Donaldson added 10 points and four assists, while Danny Wolf chipped in 13 rebounds.
