The nation's longest winning streak has come to an end. No. 2 Iowa State (15-2, 4-1 Big 12) saw its 12-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, as West Virginia (12-4, 4-2 Big 12) grinded out a 64-57 win.
The Cyclones, whose only previous loss came before Thanksgiving to the nation's No. 1 team Auburn, shot a measly six percent (1-17) from three in its second game without sharpshooter Milan Momcilovic.
ISU outshot West Virginia from the floor and foul line, as well as outrebounded the Mountaineers and dominated the points in the paint, but WVU's opportunistic defense and outside shooting helped them spurn the upset. West Virginia flipped the script on the Cyclones, turning them over 14 times, with all 14 resulting in steals.
Iowa State was led again by Curtis Jones, who made his third start of the season, as he netted 18 points with a season-high eight rebounds. Joshua Jefferson collected his seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Keshon Gilbert rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13.
The Mountaineers, who were celebrating the life and legacy of Jerry West throughout the game, were led by the conference's leading scorer Javon Small. Small had a game-high 27 points with a game-high four steals in 35 minutes of action as he helped WVU to the upset. Mountaineer forward Amani Hansberry had four threes and six rebounds as he was the lone other player to finish in double figures.
How it Happened
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 6-0 lead, capitalizing on three ISU turnovers in the first handful of possessions in the game. The Cyclones quickly responded, rattling off a 6-0 run of their own to knot things up at six in the under-16 timeout.
After West Virginia's 6-0 start, ISU rattled off a 15-3 run to take a 15-9 lead into the under-eight timeout. The rest of the first half was a slog, as both teams struggled to get going on offense, missing open shots and turning the ball over. Eventually, though, West Virginia went into the break up one, 25-24.
The Cyclones shot 41 percent from the field in the first stanza but only had two assists and a pair of steals with no fast break points – a stark difference from how they normally fare. The team was 0-7 behind the three-point line and had seven turnovers too.
Iowa State retook the lead immediately out of the break, feeding Jefferson in the post. The two teams would trade leads multiple times in the first half of the second period, before ISU pushed its lead to the largest of the second half, 4, at the 9:09 mark.
A Mountaineer triple with seven minutes remaining put WVU in front, and they never looked back from there. West Virginia got timely stops on defense and whenever ISU inched closer, they had an answer, eventually going on to win by seven.
WVU has won nine of the last 11 meetings between the two teams and now nine straight games in Morgantown. Today was West Virginia's third top-ten win of the season.
Key Performer
Despite the loss, Joshua Jefferson stuffed the stat sheet. His 10 rebounds led all players, as he also chipped in a block and a pair of steals – a team-best. His 10 points marked his 13th game of the year finishing with double-figure points. His block was also the team's only rejection.
Notes
- Tamin Lipsey passed Justus Thigpen (1990-93) for 11th in program history for total assists.
- Keshon Gilbert went over 1,200 career points today.
