Without Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year Mike Miles Jr., the No. 15-ranked TCU men's basketball team fell to Northwestern State, 64-63, Monday night in Schollmaier Arena.

Miles, who is averaging 20.5 points per game, was out due to a foot injury. 
 
The Horned Frogs (2-1) shot just 2-of-21 from 3-point range and dropped their first game of the season. The Demons (2-2) were 8-of-22, including a 7-of-13 effort from Ja'Monta Black, who led all players with 25 points. TCU's balanced scoring effort was led by Chuck O'Bannon's 12 points. Micah Peavy joined O'Bannon in double figures with 10 points. 
 
The Horned Frogs struggled to pull away from the Demons early. With 7:50 to go, NSU hit back-to-back 3-pointers, giving them a 19-17 lead. 
 
TCU led 31-29 at the half with the help of 13 points from the free throw line on 19 attempts. TCU came out strong in the second half, with 17:03 left on the clock, O'Bannon hit the Frogs' first three-pointer of the night beginning a 13-4 run that gave them their largest lead of the game, 49-37.
 
Northwestern State then hit five 3-pointers while the Frogs went 2-of-11 from the same distance. TCU led 61-56 with 4:44 to play after a layup from Shahada Wells. The Frogs shot 1-for-6 the rest of the game, including a final 3-point attempt from O'Bannon at the buzzer. 
 
The game had a total of seven ties and 16 lead changes. TCU returns to action on Thursday at 7 p.m. against ULM. The game will be on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
 
Team Notes 

  • TCU fell to 6-1 all-time against Northwestern State.
  • TCU started 0-for-11 from 3-point range before Chuck O'Bannon knocked one down at the 17:03 mark in the first half.
  • TCU out-rebounded NSU, 41-34. The Frogs fell to 102-35 when out-rebounding their opponent under Jamie Dixon.

Individual Notes

  • Micah Peavy scored 10 points. It was his second game this season in double figures. 
  • Eddie Lampkin Jr. had a game-high 11 rebounds. It was the second time this season and the 14th time of his career he led the Frogs in rebounds.
  • PJ Haggarty scored his first collegiate points in the first half, a 3-point play that put the Frogs up one. 
  • Shahada Wells led the team in steals with three.
  • Of the 10 Horned Frogs who played, nine scored.
