Memphis Tiger head men's basketball coach Penny Hardaway has secured an impact student-athlete for 2022-23 in Kendric Davis (G, 6-0, SMU), the 2022 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the top available transfer.

Davis is the second 1,000-point scorer the Tigers have added this offseason, joining Elijah McCadden (G, 6-4, Georgia Southern University). Davis spent the 2018-19 season at TCU and then played his sophomore-through-senior seasons at SMU (2019-22).

"I cannot explain what it means to add Kendric to the great history of Memphis Tiger Basketball," Hardaway said. "I feel Kendric is the best point guard in the country. His work ethic is unbelievable, and he is a great leader. He is the ultimate competitor, and his basketball IQ simply cannot be taught.

"I believe the City of Memphis and Tiger Nation will be ecstatic that Kendric will be wearing the Memphis logo next season in our quest for a National Championship."

In his four-year career, Davis has logged 1,548 points in 112 games for a 13.8 point-per-game career scoring average. The Houston, Texas, native is a career 35.3 percent shooter from behind the arc and an 83.0 percent shooter from the free throw line. Davis is also averaging 4.6 assists per game for his career.

As a senior in 2021-22, Davis secured AAC Player of the Year honors after averaging 19.4 points, 4.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game for the Mustangs. That followed a 2020-21 junior campaign where Davis was the only player in the country to lead his league in both scoring and assists with 19.0 points and 7.6 assists per game. As a sophomore at SMU in 2019-20, Davis contributed 14.2 points, 6.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds per outing.

This past season, Davis helped SMU to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament and scored 20 or more points on 15 occasions and twice reached the 30-point plateau. He led the Mustangs in scoring 24 times, in assists 28 times and in steals 14 times. Along with being the AAC Player of the Year, Davis was also on the All-AAC First Team, the NABC All-District First Team, the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team for best player in the country and was named the National Player of the Week on Jan. 3.

The Tigers finished the 2021-22 season with a 22-11 record and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2014. In four seasons at the helm, Hardaway has amassed an 85-43 record, four-straight 20-win seasons and the 2021 National Invitation Tournament championship in addition to the 2022 NCAA Tournament appearance.

Hardaway's 85 wins are second-most among 14 first-time NCAA Division I head coaches hired prior to the 2018-19 season and tied for third-most among Tiger head coaches in their first four seasons. In his tenure, Hardaway has mentored two first-round NBA Draft picks, three AAC Freshmen of the Year, five all-conference selections and five all-freshman honorees.
