No. 17 Texas Longhorns Men's Basketball Falls to the No. 12 Villanova Wildcats

Justin Moore and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl both registered 19 points to lead No. 12/3 Villanova (4-1) to a hard-fought 68-64 victory against No. 17/22 Texas (4-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. The primary difference in the game came at the free throw line, where the Wildcats converted 14-of-19 and Texas hit 3-of-6 attempts.

Junior guard Courtney Ramey and senior guard Matt Coleman III each had 17 points to pace the Longhorns. Ramey converted 7-of-11 field goals, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, in 36 minutes. Coleman hit 7-of-15 from the floor, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, in 37 minutes.

Villanova jumped out to a 16-9 lead after a Collin Gillespie layup at the 13:04 mark of the first half. The Longhorns responded with an 18-4 run over the next six minutes to grab a 27-20 advantage following a Kai Jones dunk with 6:54 remaining. The Wildcats then closed the half on a 12-3 spurt to take a 32-30 lead into the break.

Villanova built its lead to as much as eight points (51-43) after a Moore layup at the 12:24 mark. Texas fought back and tied the game at 57-57 on a Ramey three-pointer with 2:33 left. The Wildcats answered with a Cole Swider three-pointer and a Robinson-Earl dunk in transition to take a 62-57 advantage at the 1:40 mark.

The Longhorns closed to within two points on three occasions in the final minute but could not get closer. Gillespie sealed the victory by hitting a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining.

Texas returns to action when it hosts Texas State on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Tip is set for 7 p.m. CT at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
