No. 9 Iowa State used a 16-0 run in the first half to beat Chicago State 79-48 Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones improved to 12-0 on the year, the second-best start in school history, while Chicago State dropped to 4-8 overall.
Tristan Enaruna and Izaiah Brockington each had a double-double to lead the Cyclones. Enaruna had 19 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double, while Brockington turned in his sixth of the year with 20 points and 13 points. Brockington also added a career-high four steals. Caleb Grill had 11 points, while Gabe Kalscheur had a career-high eight assists and three steals, as he made his 100th career start. George Conditt IV and Aljaž Kunc each had a pair of blocked shots.
With the game tied at 4-4, a layup by Kalscheur sparked a 16-0 run by the Cyclones. Kalscheur ended the run with a 3-pointer, as Iowa State led 20-4 with 12:22 left in the half. The Cougars cut the lead to nine with 3:33 to play in the half, but neither team hit a bucket in the final 2:12 as Iowa State led 34-23 at the break.
A layup by Kalscheur opened the second half scoring, as Iowa State went on a 13-5 run to push the lead to 19 with 14:36 to play. Grill hit a 3-pointer with 12:00 left, as the Cyclones went on a 19-3 run. A 3-pointer by Tre Jackson with 7:55 remaining pushed the lead to 31.
The Cyclones shot 48.2 percent, while holding Chicago State to 27.8 percent from the field. The Cougars were 2-of-20 from 3-point range. Iowa State had a 21-2 advantage in bench points. The Cyclones have held nine of their 12 opponents to 60 points or less.
Iowa State returns to action Jan. 1, as the Cyclones host top-ranked Baylor at Hilton Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be available on ESPNU.
