Tulane University baseball sophomore Collin Burns was selected as a 2021 Brooks Wallace Award semifinalist on Tuesday.
Burns earned the recognition after establishing himself as one of the team's most valuable players both offensively and defensively. The Metairie, Louisiana native ranks second on the team in batting average, hitting at a .353 clip.
Burns leads the team offensively in hits (71), runs scored (48), doubles (17), triples (3), total bases (112) and stolen bases (17). He is also tied for team lead in home runs (6).
The award, sponsored by Mizuno, honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented this summer by the College Baseball Foundation. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
The award rewards outstanding defensive play as much as it does production at the plate, which opens the watch list to all kinds of players at the position.
Defensively, Burns owns a .976 fielding percentage and has committed just four errors in the 165 fielding chances he has had this season.
