University of Richmond outfielder Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in in the 19th round with the 557th overall pick of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft.

Mathes becomes the 45th player in Spider Baseball history to be drafted and the first since the 2019 season.

A two-way player for the Spiders, Mathes finished the 2022 season second on the squad with a .344 batting average, 85 hits, 13 doubles and 59 RBI. He led the Spiders with 10 home runs and six triples and 61 runs scored. On the mound, Mathes went 3-2 in nine appearances with six starts, with a 3.35 ERA in 43.0 innings pitched. He struck out 58, including a career-high 12 against Cornell (3/20).

Mathes was named to the 2022 Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team as well as the 2022 A-10 Baseball Second Team.

In his three seasons with the Spiders, Mathes holds a .333 average at the plate with 117 hits, 22 doubles, seven triples and 12 home runs and 76 RBI in 94 games. He has a 4.14 career ERA, with 107 strike outs over 82.2 innings.
