Michigan State baseball was recognized with the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award for the seventh-consecutive year.
The American Baseball Coaches Association recognized the nearly 800 member college and high school programs from across the country with the 2021-22 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, which is presented by Sports Attack. Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were honored with this year's award, which highlights programs coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2022-23 academic year.
Over 300 high school programs and more than 450 collegiate programs from the NCAA Div. I, II, III, NAIA, and Junior College levels were recognized.
"We're very proud to receive the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award again. I think out players truly understand the term student-athlete and all that's implied and all the work that goes into that," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "A great deal of appreciation goes to our academic advisor Melissa Tallant, she does a tremendous job of working with our guys and getting the most out of them."
MSU registered a program-record GPA for the fourth-straight semester with a 3.534 cumulative GPA, after posting a 3.587 in the Spring 2023 semester.
"It's a honor to work with such a great hard-working group of student-athletes and coaching staff," assistant director of MSU Student-Athlete Support Services Melissa Tallant said. "They fully embrace and commit to the hard work and dedication required to reach success in the classroom, and this award represents that commitment. For them to earn this honor for the seventh year in a row is just another compliment to them and their diligence to accomplishing their goals, and I'm proud of them for earning this accolade."
Michigan State was one of six Big Ten teams on the 129-team Division I list, marking the second-straight year for posting the most B1G teams in the last eight years of the ABCA's records, with MSU the only team to have been on each of the last seven years. There were not any B1G teams in 2016, before the Spartans were joined by Minnesota in 2017, then MSU was the lone conference team in both 2018 and 2019. Illinois and Ohio State joined MSU on the 2020 season list, then Michigan State was joined by Illinois and Rutgers for the 2020-21 season. The 2022 season saw six teams, with Michigan State joined by Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Purdue and Rutgers, before this season's six teams with Michigan State being joined by Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Northwestern and Purdue.
