The No. 20 ranked FIU men's soccer team saw chances against No. 8 Kentucky in a Conference USA battle on the road, but the Panthers and Wildcats ultimately played to a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes of scoreless action.
FIU's record now stands at 7-1-2 on the season and 3-0-1 in C-USA, while Kentucky owns a 7-0-3 record including a 1-0-3 mark in league play.
The Panthers earned their sixth clean sheet of the season against a Top-10 Kentucky side while earning a point in the C-USA standings to remain in second place with seven points (.833)
FIU led the Wildcats in shot attempts during the opening half by a margin of 8-6, with two of FIU's opportunities coming on-goal. Stephen Afrifa saw an early chance on a breakaway opportunity in the second minute of the match, but the Panther's shot attempt landed just right of the near post.
FIU nearly scored later on in the 36th minute after Talla Faye sent a nice cross into the box for Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro, but the ensuing shot attempt ricocheted high off the crossbar.
Afrifa and Dos Santos Monteiro each had three shot attempts in the opening period, while Matias Barraza and David Garcia were credited with one apiece. Tyler Hogan nabbed a clutch save before the break to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.
The Blue & Gold saw four more shot attempts after the intermission, including two more on-goal from Afrifa. FIU earned two corner kicks that resulted in shot attempts by Kareem Riley and Yushi Nagao at the 79th and 87th minute-marks, respectively, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
Afrifa saw another great breakaway chance in the 86hth minute after getting behind the Wildcats' defense, yet the Panther's shot attempt was denied thanks to a kick save from the Kentucky goalkeeper. Tyler Hogan nabbed another two saves to stave off Wildcat scoring opportunities in the second period.
FIU saw a couple of late chances in overtime after earning two corner kicks in the final 10 minutes, but the Panthers never found the back of the net as the match ended in a stalemate.
Afrifa led the contest with a game-high five shot attempts, including three on-goal.
Hogan logged his third clean sheet in as many games and hauled in a total of four saves, while the FIU backline played soundly to collectively earn the shutout against Kentucky.
Centerbacks Garcia and Riley, as well as defensive midfielder Matteo Gasperoni, each played a full 90-minutes in the contest.UP NEXT
