Oklahoma State scored touchdowns on its first three offensive possessions and held a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. With the Cowboys up, 21-7, in the second quarter, Miami's standout quarterback D'Eriq King sustained an injury and did not return.
Even with King out, the Hurricanes worked their way back into the game and with 3:14 left in the fourth quarter, had the ball and trailed by only three, 37-34. The Cowboy defense got the key stop they needed when Malcolm Rodriguez brought down Michael Redding short of the sticks on fourth down with 1:36 remaining to preserve the win.
Game Notes
- Brennan Presley enjoyed a record-setting performance. The true freshman from Tulsa finished with six catches for 118 yards. Entering the game, he had a season total of one reception for seven yards. His total for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns both set OSU freshman bowl records.
- It wasn't until Oklahoma State's 16th offensive snap that the Cowboys handed the ball to a running back. 14 of OSU's first 15 offensive plays were passes, with the lone exception a called pass play that became a run when quarterback Spencer Sanders scrambled out of the pocket to gain seven yards. In the first half, Sanders completed 19-of-24 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns.
- Sanders' final numbers included 27-of-40 passing for 305 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions. He added 13 carries for 45 rushing yards as well en route to being voted as the game's MVP.
- Safety Tre Sterling was a standout on defense with 13 tackles, 2.5 of which were for loss. He also broke up a pass. Sterling's 13 tackles were the most for a Cowboy in a bowl game since Orie Lemon had 14 in the 2010 Alamo Bowl.

- Back from injury were left guard Cole Birmingham and running back LD Brown. Birmingham sustained an injury in the season opener against Tulsa and missed the next 10 games. Brown missed the final three games of the regular season.
- All-America receiver Tylan Wallace returned to the lineup after missing the regular-season finale to injury. He caught six passes for 45 yards in the first half, but did not play at all in the second half.
- With Wallace out, Tay Martin stepped in and had his most productive outing in an Oklahoma State uniform, both in terms of receptions and receiving yards. He finished with six catches for 73 yards.
- With Rodarius Williams out, Christian Holmes was called upon to start at cornerback for the second straight game. Holmes recorded four tackles and two passes broken up.
- Hunter Anthony, an offensive lineman throughout his career, was utilized as a Cowboy Back at times during the game.
