Three University of Miami football student-athletes were among those players selected as Associated Press All-Americans, it was announced Monday.
Headlined by kicker Jose Borregales’ selection to the AP All-America First Team, Miami was one of five schools to have three or more players honored.
Punter Lou Hedley and defensive end Jaelan Phillips were both named to the AP All-America Second Team.
Borregales, one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award honoring the nation’s top kicker, delivered one of the best regular seasons ever by a Miami kicker in 2020. The Miami native finished 18-for-20 on field goal attempts and a perfect 35-for-35 on extra point attempts during the regular season. Borregales, who was also selected to the All-ACC First Team, finished 8-for-10 on field goals of 40 yards or longer and a perfect 10-for-10 on field goals shorter than 40 yards. He recorded 46 touchbacks on 65 kickoff attempts.
Hedley recorded one of the most impressive individual seasons by a Hurricane punter in program history. The redshirt junior, who is a finalist for Ray Guy Award honoring nation’s top punter, also earned second-team All-ACC recognition this year. The Mandurah, Australia native ranked No. 2 in FBS during the regular season in punting (47.3 yards per punt). Hedley helped lead Miami to an FBS-leading net punting average of 44.98 during the regular season. He had a long punt of 60 yards and posted 19 punts of 50-or-more yards.
Phillips posted a dominant first season with Hurricanes, ranking among team leaders in nearly every defensive category. A second-team All-ACC selection, Phillips started all 10 games of the regular season and finished with 45 total tackles (21 solo). He led Miami with 15.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks, and ranked among ACC and FBS leaders in TFLs. Phillips, who was named a Bednarik Award semifinalist as the nation’s top defensive player, was credited with five quarterback hurries and had one interception to go along with three PBUs.
