(BCSNN) — BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa was named both the Big 12 Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week on Monday after averaging 32 points, 8.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists across two games against Top‑10 opponents. The 6‑foot‑9 forward was also selected to the Big 12 Starting Five for the 10th time this season.
Dybantsa opened the week with 35 points in a 75–68 loss to No. 4 Arizona, breaking BYU’s freshman single‑season scoring record that had stood since 1978. He shot 13 of 28 from the field, 2 of 6 from three and 7 of 8 at the free‑throw line, adding seven rebounds and two assists.
He followed with 29 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in a 79–69 win over No. 6 Iowa State, nearly recording his second triple‑double of the season. Dybantsa played all 40 minutes and shot 10 of 17 from the field, 2 of 4 from three and 7 of 9 at the line. He also held Iowa State’s leading scorer, Milan Momcilovic, to five points on 1‑of‑5 shooting.
The nation’s leading scorer has now topped 30 points multiple times this season and continues to anchor BYU’s offense and defensive matchups. His performances helped deliver BYU’s first home win over a Top‑10 opponent since 2020 .
BYU hosts UCF on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Marriott Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. MT on ESPN2.
