Baylor baseball freshman left-handed pitcher Mason Green has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the conference office.
Green dazzled in his Sunday start against No. 23 Texas Tech, picking up his first collegiate win after throwing six shutout innings and allowing just two hits in BU's series-clinching 7-2 victory. He matched his season and career best with three strikeouts on just 66 pitches before an hour and 26-minute rain delay forced his early exit from the ballgame.
The Cypress, Texas, native recorded 14 of his 18 outs in four pitches or fewer and never faced more than four Red Raiders in an inning. In just the second start of his college career, Green's six innings were the most thrown by a Baylor starting pitcher so far in 2024.
The series win marked BU's first over a ranked opponent since taking two of three from No. 23 Duke on Feb. 25-27, 2022. It was also Baylor's first series win over Texas Tech since winning two of three on April 23-25, 2021, in Lubbock.
"He was fantastic. He got them to take a bunch of swings that they didn't really want to take, and he got a bunch of outs on them," second-year head coach Mitch Thompson said about Green's performance. "To be six innings into the game and have a pitch count in the sixties, that's pretty good. He's the kind of guy that can go finish one for you. It's not very often you see complete games in college baseball anymore, but he's got a shot. Down the road, we may see one of those from him."
This is the third weekly award for the Bears in the Thompson era and BU's 18th Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honor all-time.
